Description
The unique quality of her tone and her intense interpretations on stage make Diana Damrau a much loved performer by opera houses and concert halls worldwide. Born in Günzburg an der Donau, in Bavaria, she has covered a large number of opera titles within a few years, following her Würzburg debut: Die Zauberflöte (Queen of the Night), Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Konstanze), Ariadne auf Naxos (Zerbinetta), Rigoletto (Gilda), Hänsel und Gretel (Gretel), Der Rosenkavalier (Sophie), La Fille du régiment (Marie), Don Giovanni (Donna Anna), Massenet’s Manon, Die Fledermaus (Adele), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rosina), L’Elisir d’Amore (Adina), Le Comte Ory (Adèle), to name only a few. She was acclaimed by the  «New York Sun» as “the leading coloratura soprano in the world” and has starred in several world premieres: Cerha’s Der Riese vom Steinfeld, Iain Bell’s A Harlot’s Progress, and Lorin Maazel’s 1984. Her spectacular interpretation of the title role in Salieri’s L’Europa Riconosciuta, at the new opening of La Scala in Milan in 2004, won her enthusiastic acclaim by critics and audience. Prized as “Best Female Singer” by the 2014 Opera International Awards, Diana Damrau keeps on proving her versatility and fine vocal technique while facing roles like Philine (Mignon), Elvira (I Puritani), Linda di Chamounix, Amina (La Sonnambula), three soprano roles from Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Violetta (La Traviata), and Léïla (Les Pecheurs des Perles). She opened the 2013-2014 season of La Scala interpreting a sorrowful Violetta Valery. Between 2014 and 2015 she interpreted the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bayerische Staatsoper and then in Milan, delivering a touching interpretation coupled with striking expressions and impressive virtuosity. On 30 April 2015 at the opening ceremony of the Expo in Piazza Duomo, in Milan, she performed together with Lang Lang and Andrea Bocelli at a gorgeous concert broadcasted worldwide. She is also an appreciated performer of Lieder and recitals concerts next to such pianists as Helmut Deutsch, Julius Drake, and Matthias Lademann. Beatrix Conrad has produced a documentary about her, titled Diana Damrau-Diva Divina, broadcasted in February 2011 on Arte.
