After the European tournée with the Staatskapelle Dresden, which in September took him to Rheingau, Milan, Bucharest, Linz, and Prague, Daniele Gatti returns to the Semperoper Dresden on Sunday, October 5, to conduct a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff staged by Damiano Michieletto and opening title of the 2025/26 Dresden opera season. This marks Gatti’s second season-opening event after the opening concert of the Staatskapelle on August 31, but it is his first at the Semperoper in his role as Chief Conductor of the Dresden-based orchestra. In addition to the performances of Falstaff — Verdi’s masterpiece runs at the Semperoper until October 24 — Gatti will also be conducting in Berlin: on October 9, with repeat performances on the 10th and 11th, he returns to the podium of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
A title strongly desired by Daniele Gatti himself, who began his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle on August 1, 2024, the new production of Falstaff directed by Michieletto runs at the Semperoper Dresden from Sunday, October 5, to October 24. “Falstaff is certainly a comedy, an ironic opera, but with a touch of nostalgia,” says the conductor. “It is the story of a solitary, mature man who has lived a full life but still has time ahead of him. A man who looks back on his decadent life with melancholy, longing for the spirit of his youth.” In this new production, Falstaff is portrayed as an aging musician, an “old rock star still chasing the thrill and adrenaline of the show”, says director Michieletto. The cast includes Nicola Alaimo in the title role, Lodovico Ravizza as Ford, Eleonora Buratto as Alice Ford, Juan Francisco Gatell as Fenton, Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Mrs. Quickly, and Rosalia Cid as Nannetta. Director Damiano Michieletto is joined by set designer Paolo Fantin, costume designer Agathe MacQueen, and lighting designer Alessandro Carletti. Choral conducting by Jan Hoffmann and dramaturgy by Dorothee Harpain.
On Thursday, October 9 — with repeat performances on the 10th and 11th — Gatti returns to the podium of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where he was last seen in early 2024. On this occasion, he conducts the prestigious orchestra in a program featuring Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz — presented in the orchestral arrangement by Gerard Schwarz — alongside Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony in C and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90.
