From 19 May to 4 June with four different musical programmes and concerts in Barcelona, Madrid, Vienna, Essen, Paris, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Prague

The sacred music of Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner’s musical theatre, the Impressionist atmospheres of Debussy, and the virtuosity of Saint-Saëns are at the heart of Daniele Gatti’s programme for his third international tour of the season at the helm of the Staatskapelle Dresden, of which he is Chief Conductor. Following the September and November tours — both in Europe, the latter in China — the conductor returns to lead the German orchestra from 19 May to 4 June on a new European itinerary featuring four different programmes across Barcelona, Madrid, Vienna, Essen, Paris, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Prague.

The tour opens tomorrow, 19 May, in Barcelona at the Palau de la Música Catalana, with Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, featuring soloists Eleonora Buratto, Elīna Garanča, Benjamin Bernheim and Riccardo Zanellato. The same work, with the same cast, will also be performed on 21 May at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, on 23 and 25 May at the Musikverein in Vienna, on 30 May at the Philharmonie de Paris, on 3 June at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and in the final stop of the tour on 4 June at the Smetana Hall in Prague.

The other three programmes see the Milanese conductor pairing Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, with soloist Gautier Capuçon, and Debussy’s La Mer with orchestral excerpts from Wagner’s Parsifal, Tristan und Isolde, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, presented in varying combinations from concert to concert.

On 20 May in Madrid, the Saint-Saëns and Debussy works are combined with the Prelude to Act III and the Good Friday Spell from Parsifal, as well as the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. In subsequent dates—at the Musikverein in Vienna (24 May), the Philharmonie Essen (27 May), the Alte Oper Frankfurt (1 June), and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (2 June)—the Prelude from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg replaces the excerpts from Tristan. On 29 May at the Philharmonie de Paris, the programme again features Saint-Saëns and Debussy alongside both the Meistersinger Prelude and the Tristan Prelude and Liebestod.

After the tour, from 18 June to 1 July, Daniele Gatti will be engaged at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in his new role as Music Director, a position he assumed last April, conducting the complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies.
