SONATA FOR 7 CITIES LIVE FROM CAPE TOWN

Today, May 22, “Sonata for 7 Cities: Live in Cape Town” is released, the second album of Filippo Gorini’s international project for Alpha Classics

Featuring Federico Gardella’s Sonata d’altura, Schumann’s Kreisleriana Op. 16, and Schubert’s Piano Sonata in B-flat major D960 performed live

Following Vienna, “Sonata for 7 Cities” arrives on record in South Africa. Today, May 22, the thirty-year-old pianist Filippo Gorini releases the second album of his international project for Alpha Classics / Outhere Music France: “Sonata for 7 Cities: Live in Cape Town”, available on all digital platforms.

This new recording documents the second stage of Gorini’s multi-year project, awarded in 2023 with the Franco Buitoni Award, which combines musical research, new commissions, and social engagement through artistic residencies in seven cities around the world. Recorded live during the 2025 residency in Cape Town, the album presents a programme that brings together Federico Gardella’s Sonata d’altura – composed specifically for Gorini within the framework of the project – with Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana Op. 16 and Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major D960.

As with the Vienna live recording, this album is also the result of an artistic and human experience shaped through engagement with the local territory and communities. During the South African residency, Gorini combined official recitals with free lessons, public talks, and musical activities in universities, schools, and music centres active in rural and peripheral areas of the Cape region.

“These albums aim to preserve the living and unrepeatable dimension of the encounter between performer, music, and community,” says Gorini. “They are not simply recordings of a concert, but traces of relationships built over time in each place.”

“Sonata for 7 Cities” will continue in August with a new residency in Medellín, involving composers, cultural institutions, and educational organisations in a journey that intertwines performance, education, and social engagement.
